They don't just ship a new console to you every time, they know how to repair it now. So that would get repaired and he'd still have a bad drive.

Frankly you could find another dvd drive online but no doubt it would cost you 50-99 dollars anyways so the time/effort of opening the system and repairing it your better off sending it to MS. I know theres a site around called llama xbox repair that sells parts from them.

you can't simply replace a drive in the 360. you have to flash the bios of the drive w/the key of your console.

you can find drives for like $40 but as i said it's not as easy as just swapping drives in the 360 and having it work.

YES, read purbeast0's statement carefully because its right on the money!!.
You need to extract your 360's key and flash that key to the new drive to replace the drive.

So if you are uncomfortable taking your 360 apart and hooking it up to your pc, then maybe the MIcroshaft/$99 route would be best for you.

Pay the 99 bucks. I get disk read errors sometimes but I am waiting to see if it RROD on me. I will give it another 2 months and then I will send to MS and jusy pay for a new drive. If I can get it to RROD then I will send it in and also tell them the DVD drive started fubaring right before the RROD and hope they will swap that as well. I will also mention this would be the 3rd time this sucker went back to the MS shop.

I would like to learn how to fix 360s...

Every time I try to buy a FUBAR'd console from eBay, I get sniped and someone gets it for $2 more than what I bid. The 3RoD fix is supposed to be relatively simple if you like to take systems apart.

Why would people sell RRoD consoles on Ebay when they can just return them to get them fixed under warranty?

It's usually 1 of 2 things - either they didn't want to wait the 3 weeks or so, and bought a new one and are selling the broken one to recoup some losses. Or, many are opened/voided-warranty consoles which won't be accepted by Microsoft.

If you're looking to buy a RRoD console, definitely make sure to ask the buyer - and keep it in print - if the console's warranty is still valid and if it has ever been opened/modified in any way.

Yeah, it is pretty much 5 bucks at radioshack for parts to bring one back to life, but it isn't exactly a permanent fix. It will fail again eventually but I've seen ones go for months now without an issue.

Doing the RRoD fix (X-Clamp) isn't expensive, but it's a PITA. If you want a cheap 360, buy one off the forums. Newer hardware models don't have this same issue.

<--- Fixed several RRoD machines

I believe if you read the warranty, it is non transferable.
