Reading this thread on pricing PC repair got me thinking about trade-in-kind. Has anyone here gotten anything particularly cool or neat in exchange for PC repair?

One of the best trades I got was from a single mother -- she was basically broke but desperately needed her PC fixed so that she could keep up with her homework. At the time I did quite a lot of on-the-side PC repair, so I figured since I had a decent side income I could take on a pro bono job. Normally this ends up being a huge hassle, but I was young and silly. I told her if she could wrap up a sandwich or something for me to take away then we could call it even -- so she didn't feel I was treating her like a charity case, and also since I'd be missing dinner to fix her PC. After I repaired it (maybe 45 minutes) and was getting ready to leave, she handed me a bag. There was a sandwich, and 7 cheap disposable-containers frozen solid. She had little money, but did have a garden, and had cooked up extra vegetables so I had peas, corn, beans, and so on -- cooked and ready to go. Basically, I had supper for a week.

I've also ended up with homebrew wine, 20-year-old scotch, cartons of smokes, one older lady gave me a half of a oven-roasted turkey breast, and I've gotten other stuff I won't go into. Anyone gotten anything interesting in trade?

That's really kind of you, but I can tell you out of personal experience that when you do something for anyone for (nearly) free, everyone will instantly know and expect you to work for them for free as well.

For some reason people always want to pay me in beer. I tell them I would rather have the cash.

The only people I do a trade-in type deal with is my family. It usually amounts to me going over to my parents house for dinner or my dad fixing my car.

One guy was broke but said he'd kick me down with a nice box full of Omaha Steaks. I'd say the meat was worth close to 100 bucks. I would have charged him 50 bucks. He was happy, and I was eating like a king for a few days. I never make it a habit to do work for trade-in, as some people will try to get you to install their DSL for a friggen dozen home baked cookies.
