Does anyone here do their own pest control?

I'm getting fed up with the lousy service of the one I use, and I'm thinking I might cancel and do it myself.

Is it enough to buy one of those pest control cans and spray along the foundation? Or do you need to do more?

Every year we used to get ants in our kitchen but I started boiling water and pouring it into the ground along the foundation near the kitchen. Not sure if it worked but we haven't had them invade our house in years.

I spray all thresholds (doors, windows, foundation vents), spray the soffets, and sprinkle granules around the foundation every few months. Much cheaper than hiring a pro and seems to have done the trick thus far (and this is in GA, which is quite buggy).

where do you guys live where u have ants coming in your house??? my cats been known to leave a mice parts on the front steps..

Northern Virginia for me and we have that problem every spring. Even worse now is the frigging stink bugs that some idiots managed to bring over from Asia that have now established themselves in our region.

Go down to a local Home & Garden store.

they will have sprayers and also be able to point you to the proper chemicals for your area.
Usually those chemicals are the same that the professionals use

That's what I do as well. No need to pay a professional unless you have a serious problem like termites.

My wife wanted to keep paying the professional. I'm sure this has nothing to do with him being a pro triathlete in his spare time. :hmm:

Pest control is what I do best:

It depends on what you are needing to control. We have ants and roaches in our area and I use a Solo backpack and Carbaryl (Sevin) that you can buy and a local feed store (usually). Stay away from any chemical that requires a license, obviously.

Also, do not buy it from a hardware store (home depot, lowes, ace, etc.) as they are usually VERY weak compared to what you can mix up yourself.

Always use Personal Protection Equipment as well. ESPECIALLY WITH INSECTICIDES. They will kill you too!

Ant traps in the garage and behind the oven/refrigerator. Fly paper if a stray piece of fruit attracts fruit flies. Actually seen the cats hunt larger insects and spiders. Haven't noticed mice as an issue, but I've used traps with them before. If they get inside, well, cats again.

Rabbits have the good sense to stay outside.

Im in AZ and have to spray for crickets and scorpions (crickets attract scorpions). I use CY Kick and it works very well. CY Kick kills...well...everything. I spray my entire property, and inside my garage around the edge.

Well, I don't have anyone else do it. I have things pretty much under control ATM. I've had issues with ants, yellow jackets, rats, mice, squirrels, possums, racoons, cockroaches, aphids, spiders, telemarketers, door knockers, trolls, vandals, thieves, noisy neighbors, nasty roommates, crazy girlfriends. 😎

I cancelled my service, but I still haven't made any decisions.

I think I might check local pest guys to see if I'm comfortable with any of them.

I change my own oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid and other fluids in 3 cars that I have. Bugs don’t like petroleum products. I have been pouring my used oil products around the outside of my foundation for many years. No more ants, crickets, cockroaches, or anything. It takes me about 2 years of used oil products to cover the diameter of my house. Obviously depends on how heavy you pour it.

Once you spill used oil in your car trying to take it to a recycle shop, you’ll appreciate this idea. The used oil can also be used as grass/weed killer around fence posts and other places you don’t want grass or weeds.

Is it Eco friendly? Well, the oil came from the ground and you are just returning it back to the ground.
