I've tried several and while their interface is probably the best, I've not been impressed at all with the iPOD's sound quality. Used my own Sennheiser headphones to try out a friend's Creative Zen Micro and a co-worker's 40GB iPOD on the same day and couldn't ignore how much better the Zen sounded (although the Zen Micros don't come bigger than 6GB). Then I found out from an audiophile buddy of mine that the iPOD's specs (bass, THD something or other - the thing that causes the sound to seem "tinny") are not terribly impressive at all (something about attenuating bass to save on its crappy battery life). If they didn't cost so much I might be more tempted to jump on that bandwagon but the fact that they're actually so much more kind of irritates me. These are music players after all, it should, ultimately, be about how the music sounds.
On a personal note, a few years back I was at the Jacob Javitz convention center in NYC where I was going to school, and there was a Mac convention going on. Some guy in jeans and a black turtleneck was speaking and I quickly learned it was Steve Jobes, the president, or CEO- whatever, of Apple at the time, and maybe still. He talked about the direction of certain gadgets that were being showcased at the time but culminated his whole rhetoric with "Color me happy for being in the presence of people who're happy to give more for the sake of style."
My jaw kind of dropped at this - and the funny thing was no one seemed insulted. No, that's not true, there were some older guys whose eyebrows shot up at that comment but essentially, no one seemed to get the insult, or maybe Jobes didn't even mean to be insulting.
In any case, I decided then that, if avoidable, I wasn't going to be a part of that demographic in the future. If others want to pay more 'for the sake of style', then so be it. It's more important to me to feel confident about what's under the hood of my gadgets, PC's, etc. Besides there's enough iPOD users to 'color him happy' for the next decade...I'd just rather not be one of them...
my two cents.
