shrlk21.ocx

I've gotten an error saying that this file is missing or corrupt everytime I start up Windows, and it's starting to get a bit annoying. If anyone does, ICQ me and I'd be most appreciative :) Otherwise, I may have to kill someone soon....

OCX:
Short for OLE Custom control, an independent program module that can be accessed by other programs
in a Windows environment. OCX controls end with a .ocx extension. OCX controls represent Microsoft's second
generation of control architecture, the first being VBX controls written in Visual Basic. Both VBX and OCX
controls have now been superseded by ActiveX controls. However, ActiveX is backward compatible with OCX
controls, which means that ActiveX containers, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, can execute OCX
components.

Actually, that definition is a bit off. Visual Basic could never create a VBX, it could only use them. Also, ActiveX is an MS interprocess communication standard, an OCX is just one way that standard is used. Here's the definition straight from MS.

<< ActiveX
A set of technologies that enables software components to interact with one another in a networked environment, regardless of the language in which they were created. ActiveX? is built on the Component Object Model (COM).

ActiveX control (OCX)
A reusable, stand-alone software component often exposing a discrete subset of the total functionality of a product or application. An arbitrary number of ActiveX controls can be used as prefabricated components to aid in building a new application. ActiveX controls cannot run alone and must be loaded into a control container such as Microsoft Visual Basic or the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Formerly referred to as OLE control or OCX. For more information, see the ActiveX SDK section of the Platform SDK.

BoberFett:

I used to try and give personal help more, but this forum is so full of insecure immature angry people, who turn around and scold me individually, with great hubris, when I post the most innocent of opinions. Just yesterday, "savage death" attacked me personally when I tried to help two posters who had no success (P3V4X) in using his "idiot proof" self running bios flashing program. One poster said he was using Win 98SE, I presume the other - similar. I showed them how to flash similarly from within Windows (safe mode). Savage (who has one of those moronic rhambus sigs) used his proggie from within Win2K which naturally has no DOS, making floppy useless. He said "You should be more careful in posting stuff you know nothing about" (to paraphrase). Of course there IS a command prompt in Win2K, but thats another story. Savage took my attempt at help other than his method as an attack on him.
Note that I don't have this problem with any other forum, only here. People are free to argue tech with me of course, but the nastiness accompanying that here is unique to this forum. I'm sure that, because a large portion of the forum is teen or near teen, who have no life experience, has a lot to do with it.
So you see, I post links all the time on AT, not because I'm a search nut, but because its the only SAFE WAY to post here. A link is impersonal.
I like the web news on AT, and there a lot of informative links here, which I appreciate.
And this IS a public forum, free to all, and I don't have to pass any suitability test by Mr. Savage Death to post.
Anyway, BF, I hope this explains my "link thing".

Got one suggestion. If you don't mind backing up your registry, try searching for that file, and wipe all traces of it in the registry (just take care of what context it appears in just in case). If your OS/Apps are still functioning, it might not need the file anyway. Beats an entire OS reinstall if no one has the file :)
