Does anyone have or know of idiot directions for running my own server?

Ok, I've got a static IP address.

FOR FUN,

I want to run my own server.

I own a spare domain at godaddy.

I do not understand what I need to do as far as running my own DNS, and all the other parts to it. Actually about all I know about DNS is that it stands for Domain Name Service and it takes time to propogate and something about me being authoritative.

I'll be doing this with Win2k trial edition server.
