Does anyone have MSN Messenger Mobile working with SMS capable phones?

For the life of me I can't get my Motorola C343 phone to send instant messages. It's signed up for MSN Mobile, contacts are allowed to see me (and receiving messages works). The one thing I'm confused about is the Welcome Message for MSN Messenger that is supposed to go to your phone. What does this do?
