Does anyone have experience cutting "african" hair?

My g/f cuts my hair. I bought a set of clippers at Wal-Mart. They do the job. Most sets will come with attachments from 1/8" up to 1.5".

I have mine cut military style, though. Very short. 1/8" on the sides. 1/2" on top. If it's going to be any longer than an inch, go see a barber or stylist.

Thanks for the tips, JDub02 and amoeba. I think I'll cut it a bit longer than yours, and will be sure to read the manual thoroughly. Will let you know how it goes. 🙂

My roommate has that kind of hair as well. Either me or his brother has cut his hair. We just use the electric clippers. First of all, you have comb his hair straight into a fro. From there u just have to use a comb and see how much u want off(that's if it's really long). If not, you need steady hands and just follow the shape of his head.

Kind of simple if you were only using clippers.

Good luck!

oh, I forgot a very important thing. That cover thing that goes over his clothes that keeps hair from sticking in his shirt and stuff. You definitely have to do that otherwise his clothes are kind of screwed.

you probably want an apron for yourself as well.

But if you are using hair cutting as a bonding thing. You can forgoe the above mentioned and just do it naked. I never liked mixing blades and skin though.

Really, it kinda depends on what you're going for. If you want him to have a close, short haircut, then clippers are best...just start with the highest guard and go from there. No need to wet the hair or anything. On the other hand, if you're thinking about cornrows, it really just has to be long enough for the person doing them to "catch", and if his hair is anywhere as long as in that pic, it's more than long enough for someone to braid/put in cornrows.

Boy, African hair.

Yeah, you pretty much have to use clippers. The way barbers do longer hair is to take the guide comb off and just sculpt the hair, but you have to be really good to do that without messing up. With a guide comb, though, it's pretty easy. Just comb the fro out so the comb doesn't get stuck and so the hair is cut at an even length and go for it. Be sure to go over a couple times to make sure he isn't left with the odd long piece.

It's pretty easy, really.

Haircuts are out-dated. I haven't had a haircut for 3 months and it's great! I can practically make ramen noodles in this bowl of mine 😀

even with razor, you still have to do initial cutting with electric clippers.

If you don't even have experience cutting straight hair, I suggest sending to a barber.

This man speaks the truth.

I have an afro myself, and that's the way to go at it. Although now that I think about it, it's been well over a year since my last haircut....😛
