If so, what modem or modem/router do you have? Is it better to have a modem and then buy your own router for this? Or is it better to have their 2wire solution? Will it make much difference to have the 1701HG or the 2701HG? Anyone care to comment?

Generally for AT&T DSL, it's always better to go with their "single computer self install package" which includes a DSL modem with built-in NAT router that's limited to a single DHCP lease on the inside interface. The version they're using now is a Westel that's pretty decent when configured to simply be a modem with no NAT services. The 2wire routers provided with the AT&T DSL service are not very good at all and I'd advise staying away from them.

For the AT&T Uverse, however, you are pretty much stuck with the 2Wire 3800HGV-B. It is, however, a much more powerful router than the 2wires provided for the standard DSL service.

That being said, if I were to have AT&T DSL again, I'd get a Cisco 1721 with an ADSL WIC. It's about $100 total on eBay, but is much better than anything you'll find in the SOHO market.

Why the Cisco? Is it wireless also? So, I would not need a modem? It has a modem like the 2wire? I will look it up and check more on it. Thanks for the info.

Are you using their service and using that modem? I have a 2wire 1700 something or other and I just put it in bridge mode and use a Buffalo router with DDWRT.

I've since switched to a local ISP and they gave me a Motorola 2210.

As far as the modem functions (DSL or cable) the few that I've used don't make any difference except when I had a Terayon cable modem that would lose sync for days at a time. Even the Adelphia tech hated it saying he had a disproportionate number of problems with that one.

ATT offers both: DSL & "uverse" fiber internet. Which one are you referring to?
For their DSL service, I'm using a Siemens 4100 DSL modem & a Netgear 614v4 wired router. Both can be found online for under $20 each (used or refurb units).

I have their service and their modem. I have the 1701HG. They don't offer uverse to me. That is the first I have ever heard of it.

I have the router hooked up to a switch. Can I bridge that or does it need to be another router?

What does the DDWRT actually give you?

Don't know what AT&T is using now, but I'm using the Speedstream 4100 for the past few years and it's worked really well. I always used my own wireless router because I didn't want to pay for the ones they offered. I previously used a Linksys WRT54G (went through three of these all with DD-WRT - they all still work, I just like playing with it) and am now using an unmodified WRT310N which has worked really well for me.

Note that a 6Megabit line is the fastest you can get with AT&T DSL. You have to get U-Verse Fibre Internet in order to get a faster connection.

Living in hicksville I am a year or two away from any fibre lines coming to my house, so 6 is all I get.
