Does anyone have a standing desk at work?

I just got one. Wondering what you do with all of your cords. Right now I have a desktop PC, two monitors, a lamp, and a phone on my desk. I'm worried about something getting pulled off when I elevate the desk.

Cords should be long enough. I had one, used it about once a day to stretch out the legs. Wouldnt mind having another one in the future.

I have two in my cubical as well. I have 4 PCs (all on different networks) and 6 monitors. The cords are usually long enough, especially with everything plugged into surge protectors with long cords.

A couple of my users have them. I find it odd, but hey, whatever floats their boats. I use tubes for all cabling so its really out of the way.

Yup. I had everything either sitting on the desk or attached to the bottom of the desk, so that the only things that needed to provide for elevation change were a single power cord and a couple of ethernet cables.

I have one although I rarely use it. I have a docking station and monitor stands\arms on it. Attached to my desk are two tombstones - one with 2 ethernet jacks and the other with two power outlets. Cables for all that are tubed and draped in the back. I've got a small, stationary desk next to it where I generally have a few test machines at any given time. The cables are long enough to reach one of my monitors on the standup desk when its at full height.

I built one for my home command center. I like it when recording.

Is that a permanently standing desk, or adjustable? Have any drawings/plans for it? I'm going to be moving soon and am contemplating having a desk (or at least just the top) built for me rather than buying a prefab piece of plastic.

I've seen that desk before on the internet. He's just claiming its his. I refuse to believe it is his unless he sits in a chair, faces the camera with his legs awkwardly spread and a sign that says "Yes Exterous this really is my desk" and posts a picture of it here

I have an adjustable standing desk at work, yes. I heavily recommend a good floor mat for it as well if you're standing for > 1 hour

Speaking of floor mats, anyone switching from sitting to adjustable or standing should also take care to not over-do it, particularly at first. If you have any pain anywhere after changing to standing up, return to sitting down and then stand up for shorter durations. I learned the hard way that it's easy for some to wreck themselves simply by standing for a while.

We recently got some at work. They're electric so you just push a button and it goes up and down. I rarely use it in standing mode though. The cables can be an issue, need to do some cable management and tie them off and have enough slack so it can go up and down. It's easier if the PC is on the desk too, as it minimizes the amount of cables that have to leave the desk.

Generally though, if I need to stretch my legs I tend to just walk around a bit. When I'm alone in the building I'll sometimes go for a walk around all the equipment rooms and such just to check up on things.

It's permanent. I made it out of pine & based the design on this IKEA desk hack with some modifications: http://deskhacks.com/spaceship-ikea-diy-standing-desk/

If I need to, I can also use a drafting chair with it and it works perfectly.

Haha...I want to profit from this. Want to bet any money? Say...$20? :D

I have one at work, but I also only have a laptop/docking station/monitors. Any power cords connect to a strip in a net mounted under the desk itself, then there is an extra-long power cord to connect the desk to the outlet.

It's been nice to have - sometimes it feels good to stand for a bit and work.

... $20? Do they make bills that small? How would I do that? I mean I guess I could shave some gold off one of my gold bars or cut a $100 bill in pieces but this seems like a lot of work

Its doing the thing where it won't quote for me ("messages can't be found") on the multiquote.

@Exterous: Yeessss. True ATOTer

@Platypus: Good advice.

@GeekDrew: Yeah. Really, you should be alternating between sitting and standing (doing either one for excessively long times isn't great for your health). Many of the powered adjustable desks have the ability to set a timer where it will auto raise/lower the desk.

Another recommendation is to have a stool or something that you can maybe lean on as well to alleviate some pressure when you're standing.

They also make chairs that are for kneeling or even spinning around and sitting in backwards (has cutouts in the back so that your legs and arms aren't splayed out unnaturally; the back of the chair is where it'll support your back, shoulder blade/shoulders, and head when you're sitting, but then if you sit in it backwards you'd lean your chest against the back, your legs would go through and your upper arms could even rest on the shoulder/support area and then your chin on the top of the head area).

Let’s keep that $100 bill whole then! It’s illegal to mutilate currency after all. Shake?

Skookum as frig. That's an awesome setup. I want to build my own desk some time. One of the many projects I want to do in my garage once I insulate/finish it and turn it into a shop.
Pro tip: if it did it again, I would go with 24” monitors instead of 27”. They nearly fit any monitor stands.

I may actually go with a single 32" 4k. Then any other monitors would be on Raspberry PIs and to display stuff I don't need to interact with.

What's with all the rage against sitting down again? Is it really that bad?

I can't fathom finally relaxing at home in front of my PC while standing up for 2~ hours.

I'm not sure how well it would do in transit but I guess we could bet a shake on it. Well, I'm actually not really a shake person. How about if you win I send you a Shamrock shake and if I win you send me some chocolate chip cookies?
