My boss told me that my entry level position was E-3(in terms of title it is Design Engineer), and that I could expect to be promoted to E-4 in 3 years with good performance. However, I haven't the faintest clue what this "E-3/E-4" means. According to my boss, this is some sort of standard code to indicate your job grade. I tried googling for it, but failed. Does anyone have an explanation/ Link for these?

At my work, and E1 is entry level engineer, with a promotion to E2 in a few years with good performance. E3 is considered a senior engineer. I know of a few other large companies who do it the same way.

They may be using the military pay tables.

Ditto here. If you come in with a Master's Degree, you'll start out as an E2.

E-4 reporting in. The pay still sucks but at least you get to delegate to the lower ranking sailors.

these are two different unrelated things

enlisted military grades and engineering grades

the OP is talking about civilian engineering grades , not military enlisted grades
