LOL! So many forum members, so few brain cells...
I just updated the BIOS this morning and here are my (initial) thoughts:
It does NOT cut battery life. The reason is that when on battery it does NOT overclock. It will only overclock when on AC power.
When overclocked, I seem to be able to play HD (720p) content fine that did not seem playable before. Then again, not much use when I'm on an airplane with the Wind running off batteries. Hmmm, the other thing is that more recent BIOSes (1.08+ ???) boosted overall system performance by 4-6% even without overclocking, so maybe...
In doing some research, most stock Winds can overclock the maximum 24%. People usually start having problems when they upgrade their RAM. The reason is that the Wind BIOS locks the RAM multiplier and latency settings. Stock speed RAM runs at 533MHz CAS 4 1.8v. Overclocked RAM runs at around 660MHz CAS 4 1.8v. This means you basically have to use DDR2-667 CAS4 RAM, which is a rare beast. Some people have found that their maximum overclock drops to a lower setting (15% or even less) when having extra RAM in there. So far I've found very few offerings that can hit those speeds without overclocking.
single 1GB chip
G.Skill F2-5300CL4S-1GBSA $17 +ship but out of stock
two 1GB chip
Kingston KHX5300S2LLK2/2G $37 +ship in stock (when adding to cart says $31 promo price)
The Kingston actually kind of works for me because my wife has a Wind as well (if I feel like voiding warranty on both). At $31 with free standard shipping, I'm placing an order right now. BRB...
Okay, I'm back.

WTH! Kingston doesn't accept Discover Card? So much for getting 31¢ cashback for my purchase.
My next purchase for the Wind will probably be a larger/faster HDD. If the Hitachi 320GB 7200RPM deal comes back at $50, I'll get that. Otherwise I'm thinking of the Seagate 7200.4 320GB at around $80. The 7200.4 uses the highest platter density in 2.5" drives of 250GB. At 320GB it should be 3 head two platters. Normally that would make it 375GB, so it is probably short-stroked to reduce capacity to 320GB. At least, that's what I'm hoping. That would probably make it the fastest 2.5" mechanical HDD on the market right now.
Sheesh, with these upgrades and if gaming (with overclock/GMAbooster) works out, I may no longer need my other notebook (15.4", 4GB, Vista64, 250GB, Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB GDDR3).
Alright, WoW is updated. Time for some benchmarks!
WoW in-game settings
1024x600 24-bit
effects all set to LOW and all options unchecked
MSI Wind completely stock with 1GB RAM, latest 1.0B BIOS.
WTF!?!? I just downloaded GMAbooster and tested it earlier before updating WoW, and now it says "outdated, please download new version."
Fark. :disgust:
Once I get a new version, I'll come back with benchmarks.
