Does anyone have a good reference on how "bright" a millicandela (mcd) is? LEDs are all rated in mcd's. The problem is I have no reference to how "bright" 1 or 100 or 1000 mcd is! For example, does anyone know how many candela a small maglite outputs? thanks for any help!

edit: oh yeah. anyone have a favorite place to get superbright leds? mouser.com (my usual led place) doesn't seem to have white or blue superbrights...

bgmicro.com has some ultrabright leds

so does allelectronics.com

For 1000 mcd+, a picture won't do justice because it bleeds in the camera

The "smartass" answer is that a 1000 mcd LED gives the same output as one candle.

You can read more in this FAQ if you're really curious.

Finally, a AA Maglite claims to output 2,200 PBC (Peak Beam Candlepower - Maglite's units, not mine) at 5'.

I think that "peak beam candlepower" is in candela's. Probably the candelas of the flashlight when it has new batteries and a focused beam. at least I think....
