MP is multiprocessor

As far as we know, the official data claim that the server Athlon family supporting dual-processor configurations aka Athlon MP includes only two models with the working frequencies of 1GHz and 1.2GHz. Although the regular Athlon CPUs can also work in SMP-configurations, the customers still prefer Athlon MP CPUs following AMD?s recommendations. That is why it is quite natural that some of them are displeased with the fact that elder Athlon processors feature higher working frequencies than the elder Athlon MP ones. As for AMD, which is making the first steps in the server market now, does its best to meet the customer demands. Therefore, starting from the beginning of August the especially concerned customers have the chance to get an unofficial Athlon MP 1.4GHz besides the two official models.
At the same time, AMD is not determined enough to announce the shipments of its Athlon MP 1.4GHz openly, because the company still experiences some problems with the manufacturing technology for the new Palomino core used in Athlon MP CPUs. So, AMD is afraid of proving unable to fulfill all the orders if they turn out too big. Nevertheless, AMD is going to eliminate all the Palomino production problems by mid October, so that we could finally witness the launching of the so long awaited Athlon XP (desktop Palomino) as well as that of the new Athlon MP CPUs with the frequencies over 1.2GHz. AMD is expected to introduce its Athlon XP with the frequencies equal to 1.33GHz-1.6GHz right before the MPF, on October 12. And three days before, on October 9, we should see Athlon MP 1.4GHz and 1.53GHz.
The server Athlon MP 1.53GHz as well as 1.4GHz will be shipped to some selected customers somewhat earlier, before the official announcement. The sources report that it will be possible to get a sample of AMD Athlon MP 1.53GHz within the next couple of weeks already. It will cost around $340, while Athlon MP 1.4GHz is now shipped for $290.
This way by November, when several mainboard makers start shipping Dual-Socket A mainboards based on AMD 760MPX, the CPUs for dual-processor systems will no longer be something rare.
