I watch a lot of the Discovery Channel. They had a special on Piranha once and talked about how nuts and fruits were a staple of their diet. After watching the show I started feeding those items to the fish... the fish liked it.
I had my piranha for about 4-5 years. I ended up giving them to a breeder when they were too much for me to care for (I was in college at the time). The big one was about 6-8" long, pretty healthy ah heck.
EDIT: BTW... Don't let food sit in the tank too long. Make sure you remove uneaten food after 12 hours or so. If you let the food go bad in the water the fish might get sick. Also remove all bones from chicken and other bird meats. The bones will shread in their mouth and you'll have to add a salt solution to clean the wounds out. Salt can also be good for their coat, ask your pet store dude for details.
Also remove any plastic plants. My piranha liked eating the plastic plants, or at least chewing them up and throwing up the bits.
