6Mb would be 6000Kb or 750KB. Assuming it's an ADSL connection however, you won't actually get that - more like 300KB/s range.

Is it really that hard?

While I know this with my own calculations: 6Mb/s = 0.75MB/s = 768KB/s (6144Kb/s)
a simple google search can show the same thing google: 6 megabit/second to kilobytes/second... if of course, you are looking for the kilobyte/second number you see on downloads, which is KB/s, not Kb/s, which is Kilobits

now, every web server is going to feed you a different speed. microsoft tends to pump out high speeds to downloaders, as does apple.com's trailer downloads
but some servers, you might only get 4Mb/s or less.

i get ~620 out of my 750KB DSL connection from a private usenet server.

Not sure where you got those figures as I've get around 600-700kb/s out of my DSL 6mb connection. Now on 3mb, that 300kb/s figure might be correct.

I have 10 mb, speed test suggested that I get 15.6 Mbps down & 766 kbps up, but the fastest down load (Mint Linux distro) I got was bust rate around 1100-1200 Kb & just above 500 Kb sustained, and around 320 Kb up.

By far not the fastest on these boards, but a little bit better than dial-up...

8 bits = 1 byte
that gives you theoretical, take off about 10% for overhead and you got your actual.

of course that is all dependant on whoever is on the other side of the tube as well.

I found some posts saying that some ISP's can detect when you connect to some of those speedtest sites and boost your speed temporarily. They suggested using www.testmy.net.

I didn't believe it until I got some ridiculous results recently.

For example my results on Speakeasy (I have Comcast):
Download Speed 20,468 kbps
Upload Speed 3,598 kbps

www.testmy.net results:
Download Speed 4,211 kbps
Upload Speed 2,915 kbps


So, it appears www.testmy.net gives better real world results and that Comcast might be playing tricks with the speakeasy site?

Anybody else find similar results?
