Does anyone hate the new 18:9 screen ratio as much as I do ??

The old standard 16:9(or 16:10) was much better.
I have a S7 edge now and compared to the S8+, the S8+ is barely wider than the S7e.
So basically if I upgrade to the S8+, I'm only gaining extra real estate length wise.
Whats the point of that ?? It doesn't help me with everyday usage.
Its worst when browsing the web. In portrait mode, you have to zoom in and then scrolling side to side to read.
In landscape mode, you have to do a lot more scrolling .
This remind when they made the iPhone 5 longer than the IP4 and said they made it bigger.
Doesn't look like anyone beside Sony is sticking with the old 16:9 standard.
 
I didn't know what to expect prior to owning it, but I'm a huge fan of the S8+ size but YMMV:

- For mobile optimized experiences, the extra vertical real estate is very useful. Most of my usage is web browsing on mobile optimized sites (can't remember the last major site that didn't have a mobile experience) along with my email client and social apps
- It doesn't come at any expense of "handability" at all - the phone remains comfortable to one hand while viewing content, though reaching the top obviously needs 2 hands, but so did the S7 Edge.

Before the S8+, I thought the S7 Edge/Note 7 size was the absolute maximum I could live with but the S8+ is just as comfortable. True you don't get additional width so not all use cases are improved, but I find that I don't lose any real estate or portability, and find value in the extra vertical real estate.
 
I upgraded from a Nexus 6P to a S8+. I love the device, and I love the display/screen ratio. The screen ratio is excellent for reading content (browsing mobile sites, social media apps, reddit, email, etc.) I also like that the S8+ is easier to hold and use, even though the S8+ has a larger display than my 6P

I'm also one of those folks who hates on-screen buttons because they take up screen real estate. I'm happy with the latest update which lets you hide the navbar on the S8+.
 
It's great for web browsing, especially articles and forums and whatnot.

It's ever so slightly not as good for landscape video. As someone who watches a lot of video on my phone, I thought I wouldn't like it, but I have the S8+ and it doesn't bother me at all, not even noticeable to be honest.
 
It seems gimmicky to me, like they knew they couldn't go wider, so why not longer, hey look, a bigger screen!!!!
 
Not got one but I had a play in store with one and my gut feeling was that it felt more like a TV remote than a phone.
 
So based on rumorsit is likely the high end iphone for 2017 will be 18/9 but with cut outs for the camera and microphone so some of the extra 2/9 will not be a full pixels but instead an OLED cut out.

I like how you make all these assumptions without even owning the thing to understand know how it works.

I don't understand your point about browsing the web, it's going to scale the webpage to fit the width of your screen the same way it always has. All that's different is that you see more text at the same size that you're used to now without having to scroll. Why would you think you have to zoom in if you don't zoom in right now?

I also don't understand your point about landscape mode. If you're assuming that the width of the phones are the same, then in landscape the screen height is the same with either phone. Why do you think there's more scrolling?

The only gripe with it that I can see is when displaying 16:9 content, you're going to have black bars on the sides of the screen. In that case the displayed screen size is exactly the same as if they just kept the 16:9 to begin with, so you get extra screen when viewing text content, and the same displayed screen size when viewing videos. Sounds like a win/win to me

If the phone had to be a lot bigger to support the new aspect ratio, I wouldn't be as big of a fan, but since the phone is mostly screen the physical device size didn't change much. So you get a lot more screen at a slightly taller footprint. Whatever logic you used to arrive at your conclusions about scrolling doesn't sound right,and I don't really have an explanation other than it doesn't work how you think it works. If I understood how you got there I'd try to explain it better, but I can't figure out how you got there to even know where to start. It's really simple, look at your S7 right now when browsing texts or the web (anything with vertical scrolling). Now imagine that screen was an inch taller... why would you think you have to zoom in just because your screen got taller if you don't zoom in on your phone right now?

I didn't read that long ass post but the answer is obvious.
If the phone was wider the webpage would be a bit bigger and therefore you wouldn't have to move the page side to side when reading a webpage(because you have to zoom in). Sure because the phone is wider(hence shorter) would wouldn't see as much of the page vertically, but since you are in portrait mode, you don;t have to scroll up and down as much.

It's not obvious. Read the post. You're wrong.

Webpages (most of them; i.e., practically all of them) scale. This fixed width crap you keep going on about is complete BS. There is no side-to-side scrolling on either device size.

I think at this point he's trolling, so I was just going to ignore him. Nobody can be this dense
 
i had an s8 test phone at work for a while (as in before it was out).

honestly it was nice, but not game changing. i lived with it for a while and honestly it didnt add a ton for me. ultimately you can scroll to the part you are reading and movies at 16:9 etc so it didnt add a lot. not to mention having a tall screen meant having to move your finger higher up to hit the notification bar

Do yourself a favor and install any popular 3rd party launcher, like Nova Launcher. The single biggest convenience feature is being able to swipe down on any part of empty screen to bring down the notification shade. For the life of me I do not understand why this isn't built in to every single OEM launcher. It makes a big difference in one handed operation.

I too can not believe this is not widely used.
