I think I'm still traumatized from being forced to watch the Sound of Music as a child. For some reason I cringe at the thought of all musicals with the exception of Grease and Annie.

Reason is they have been doing commercials every hour on the radio for a local performance by Chicago. I'm so tempted to turn it back to Clearcase and their 10 song playlist.

It's not like I have no appreciation for fine art, because Classical music is my fave and I eenjoy opera's immensely, but musicals are just so annoying...I paid to watch you act, not attempt to sing but fail miserably

Two titles:
"Hair"
"Jesus Christ Superstar"

...until you see these you have no idea how annoying they can get.

Halfway decent acting and a plot. They would still be better if they did not break out in song and interrupt the flow of the movie.

It's like watching a movie in the theatres with commercials. The songs do nothing for them

I watched Moulin Rouge and I just wanted to beat crap out of everyone. I just wanted to punch Nicole Kidman right in the face then take her mashed face and smashing right into Obi-Wan Kenobi head and beat crap out of everyone in that piece of crap film god it sucks so bad I hate them all must kill musicals suck the big penis of life so hard I just want to punch them all the fsck out and keep punching and kicking and breaking bones and all that

Exactly...I was cracking up big time at their song selection. when the old guy started singing Like a Virgin, they nearly had to carry me out of the theater.

I dunno...I'd say that The Sound Of Music is pretty much the pinnacle of musical awfulness.

Uhh....if all you're talking about is the movies you gotta get to the theater. ESPECIALLY those lameass 1960s and 70s movies. They were awful compared to the way musicals have been filmed since EVITA.

It's a totally different experience in the theater.

But The Sound Of Music is awful either way.
Annie is crap, too.

Also, a lot of these older musicals are what you call "Book Musicals" which means that the songs are just fluff. Stay away from Rodgers And Hammerstein (Sound Of Music, Carousel, Oklahoma, State Fair) and Lerner and Lowe (Camelot, Brigadoon) and stick to musicals where the songs help drive the plot - Rent, Cabaret, anything by Sondheim, Les Mis, Miss Saigon

I'd rather shave my head with a rusty cheese grater than be forced to watch Moulin Rouge, Chicago, or any other limp-wristed, mall-shopping, Oscar Wilde reading friend of Dorothy type musical.

BLEH!

Last comment - If The Sound Of Music is what traumatized you, I think you're beyond help. Julie Andrews is pretty damn good when it comes to singing. Much better than Shirley Jones who championed most of the other lame Rodgers and Hammerstein movies.

If Julie Andrews is considered failing miserably....

Also, if you paid to see a musical you DID pay to see the performers act AND sing!
