Does anyone find it strange that they allow alcohol commercials on TV...

...but not cigarette commercials?

When's the last time you heard of cigarette related accidents? Fights? Violence? Of someone getting pulled over for being DUS or DWS?

Can someone explain the logic behind it? Or why drinking and alcohol are acceptable and smoking is not? Smokers tend to kill themselves by smoking. They don't get violent, they don't start fights, they don't throw up all over themselves, don't spend nights with their heads in toilets, etc etc.

Alcohol does seem more dangerous, but really I think kids think cigarettes are much cooler. Why do you think most people start smoking? To look cool in front of people. They start drinking for the same reason, but also just to get drunk.

Unlike the alcohol commercials airing now? With all the cool and sexy people drinking alcohol to have fun.

Probably because cigarettes are much more addictive than alcohol. Think about it. I know plenty of social drinkers, but how many social smokers do you know?

i've wondered that myself. is it just that they don't advertise, or are they prohibited from doing so?

I don't find it strange at all. It's all about entertainment value. Do you think a cigarette company could come up with commercials as funny as the beer commercials that bud comes up with?

It's illegal to show the consumption of alcohol during prime-time (otherwise known as family hour) television. Otherwise, I don't find it strange at all. Especially when you can see death sequences, rapes, sex, drug use, hear vulgarity, etc. on TV too.

I find it more strange that anyone would look to the government to prohibit alcohol commercials. Alcohol has been an accepted food product for thousands of years by cultures all around the world. But now we have been conditioned to believe that our governments need to regulate it. The conditioning has apparently run so deep that we feel that we shouldn't even look at it anymore. It's this kind of taboo view of alcohol that makes it so dangerous. In societies where alcohol is not so demonized there are far fewer problems associated with it. It's another dirty little secret that government operates on. By conditioning the masses that something is evil they feed the desire for it, and reinforce the conditioning. In the end we feel shocked that alcohol is even allowed to be advertised.

Yeah, quite a few of my friends are social smokers and social drinkers.

I just find it kind of funny that cigarette commercials are banned, yet commercials with people partying and getting drunk are allowed.

Show or portray? Because I know they portray people drinking alcohol during prime time constantly. Ever hear of a little show called Cheers?

If you allow commercials to tell you what to buy and how to think then you are just a tool. A tool of the man. Don't be. Just do it...your way, every day.

Turn on TNN or something saturday mornings, there's hunting shows that have these in the commercial breaks.

Well, hmm. I didn't say "show" didn't I. Hmm, I dunno about that one...

Yes, show. You can portray it. Ever seen the news reporter on TV down at the local pub reporting for Saint Patty's Day? They have to be careful what they film.

What?

Aside from that, what's the difference between someone drinking a beer on TV and someone drinking water out of a beer bottle on TV? For the millions of people who don't know that "It's illegal to show the consumption of alcohol during prime-time," it's the same thing.

I can't remember if it was Conan or Kilbourne back on the daily show, but he had two glasses exactly alike, filled one with ginger ale, the other with beer, did a half assed-job of switching them around to mix them up, and chugged the beer down on screen. Pretty funny. The thing I can't stand is all these perscription medicine commercials. The ban on this ought to be reinstated, they are controled substances and not up to general consumers to decide if they need them or not.
