Does anyone else have bizarre memory problems?

I can look at a phone number once and remember it for days or weeks. I can remember conversations almost verbatim for years. If something is stupid and pointless, and has no relevance to my life, I'll remember it forever.

But if I think of something I'd like to research, I'll forget what it was before the Google page loads. It pisses me off :|

So does anyone else have bizarre memory problems? Maybe you have Rainman powers but can't remember which shoe goes on which foot? Maybe you memorize phone books for fun, but walk into the bathroom and forget if you had to #1 or #2? Maybe you would like to tell your story, but totally forgot what this thread is about and had to double check? Get it off you chest now.

So what kind of drugs have you tried?

I forget 😱

haha

i do that quite often, usually with research i'm doing for school. which is bad news bears especially when it's time for an exam.

Yeah, my memory is pretty much shot due to alcohol and drug use. Sometimes I space out on the stupidest of things.

My memory is very picky; it has little trouble remembering formulas or logical things, but it has trouble with long numbers, dates, and other sorts of random stuff. That's why I do fine in calc, but suck at every history class I've ever taken. 🙁

It seems that non-using peers of mine have the same or even worse memory problems than myself, so I don't feel so bad when I forget things that I probably shouldn't. 🙂

I have exactly the same problem, you're not the only one. I can remember a conversation I had with a guy at a check out line 3 months ago. Yet I forget names of people and movies. Or I forget the errands I was supposed to run. Or I'll open a browser window but will forget what site I wanted to go to. It's sooooo weird.

what an excellent post...i am looking for methods to improve my memory. i am checking out that apa link...but if anyone can direct me to other material it would be of incredible help.

seriously tho...my mind has gathered a SIGNIFICANT amount of rust over the past few years due to non use. i know it has potential considering i managed to get into coll at 16. any and all help is appreciated.

..I have to be carefull what music I listen to..sometimes just passing by a radio wit some goofy commerical jingle or pop culture loony tune..my brain grabs it and plays it over and over. I find listening to classical music unloads the trash tunes running in my head.

Awhile back..last year in Science News..they ran an article about aspertame(nutrasweet) and memory disturbances and panic attacks in many users of diet products and diet drinks.

sometimes, after a certain event... but more often after seeing a movie ... i get the feeling that i've seen certain scenes or replayed certain parts of my life already... feels like im repeating a former life all over again

I went to a place years ago for lunch that I had never been to before, I had the vividest thought that I was there once before but I never was. I was even able to describe the rooms in detail but never went into them and no I wasnt on shrooms.

My brother and I can't remember our childhoods very well. We remember pictures and stories that were related to us about our childhood but honestly we have no clear recollection of things that occured back then.

It's interesting because we remember things in exactly the same way and our sister, Mother and Father don't have the issue.

If we strain we can trace events back and often reconstruct what happens but as often as not we're wrong.

I can remember virtually anything I read and if I want to remember it verbatim all I have to do is transcribe it, a couple of times. However daily events are ALWAYS foggy, unless associated with stress.

I can remember the birth of my children and car accidents with vivid clarity but not a conversation I had a couple of days ago.

I'm in no way disfunctional because of this. I often have the impression that all the information is there, I just don't have very effective conscious recall... Often my decisions and actions are informed by something that happened previously that I don't actively recall.. at least that's what my wife and family say.

<--- freak.

oh oh oh

I forgot to include the thing that bothers my wife a lot.

I can't recall names OR faces very well... I easily confuse people that I've met and switch thier names and faces or think that one person is another person based on superficial similarities.. like the same color of hair.

I can easily be convinced that someone I've NEVER met is someone I knew closely a few years ago if they're the about the same height and have the same hair color.

I've NEVER been able to trust my own recognition of people, If I haven't seen them in a year or so...

That sounds pretty similar to the way my memory works.
Example: When I took the ASVAB to get into the military, I scored something like a 88 or 92 on the electronics section, and had NO idea how. A couple years ago, my mom showed me a pic of me in the Cub Scouts, and I've got this big button that relates to electronics in some way on my shirt in the pic. And I played Rocky's Boot on the Apple IIc when I was young.

I suck with names. You can tell me your name and 5 minutes later it flies out the window. I call it selective hearing, kinda like when my wife is yelling at me and it goes out the window😉
