The ones I'm talking about are the "Punch the Monkey and win $20!" or "Guess which hole the mouse is going to come out of!", and they are animated images of a monkey sliding back and forth and you have to use your mouse to punch it. They are so pointless to me, I was wondering if anyobody actually clicks on these things. Normally they wouldn't be so bad, but I'm on an Athlon 700 w/ 96MB of RAM, and it still makes my cursor stop and then jump if it is on the screen.</rant>

They are the billboards of the superinformation highway. Get use to them. They are made for people so that they would get off the appropriate exits to lure them in a dimensional limbo... ;)

Which is exactly why I will not lay the smack down on some poor, defenseless (did I spell that correctly?) cyber-monkey. I hate being manipulated.

Contributing to not for profit sites is all well and good, but I don't like how they use every bit of processing power your computer can spare for a couple seconds and then stop, then do it again. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :)

Everyone should have a fast connection by now. So why does it matter that wasted junk gets downloaded as well? And one simple rule, don't like it? Don't click it.

I hardly take the exit route the internet billboards suggested. I do not like the address they take me to. I usually drive along until I reach my intended destination. Those billboards are made to take you off your desired freeway.

I've got two T1's connecting me to the Internet here. It's not the bandwidth that's a problem, it the fact that my computer slows to a crawl whenever the ads are on the screen. I don't want to have to upgrade my computer simply because the web ads take up too much processor time.

I dislike the the ads but so far the net hasn't turned into the old Prodigy where 33% of your screen was all advertising.

No, the real problem is the cookie placement/ip tracking ad agencies do. Look in your Windows\Cookies folder. You may see tons of cookies from ad sites. Do they need to be there? No. They can use these cookies to deliver "targeted ads" to you and worse. Because of that threat I never click on an ad banner because doing so reveals more information to ad companies.

You can get ad and cookie blockers but everyone I've tried either causes stability problems or slow performance or both. :(

I will usually just turn off cookies, but it makes life on the web that much more a pain in the butt. In the last month or so, all of my favorite web sites have the route of making you register before you can access the good stuff on their site. I hate logging in each time, so I'm stuck using cookies.

Cookies and banners don't bother me.. what bothers me most are POP-UPS!

I'm also sick of all the pr0n that's on the web... i don't mean the porn sites per se, but i mean getting spammed on ICQ, hotline (gotta wonder what's up with that... it's mostly Mac users that use Hotline, yet 99% of the sites there are pr0n... hmmm), NG, etc etc.

I've gotten so used to them they don't even bother me anymore. Besides, some of those ads might be useful, depending on what you're looking for. If something just happens to catch my eye, and I'm interested enough, I'll click on it. But for the most part they're useless. Whatever, they don't really bother me.:) -kd5-

I agree 100000% I hate them frickin' ads and especially any java or flash based ads. So now that I use atguard, no more frickin' ads!! ;) Webwasher works well too but atguard does a bit more and gives u selective control.

@Guard is great at elimintaing the ads, but is tough to find becuase they were bought out. I'm new to these forums, so I don't know what the rules here are, so email me Sufferin Succotash, and i'll try to point you to a site. aps81@home.com.

http://www.geocities.com/bladeisme/atguard.zip ;)
They don't have it available anymore at atguard's site.
Once u get it downloaded and unzipped then open the .exe file to start the install. Once installed go to settings, web and active content. There u can stop pop ups, make animated gif non-repeating and block all java script if u wish. Some sites do require java for u to use the site properly so I just have pop ups blocked.

-edit- to download it u using ie u will have to right click the link and select "save target as".

link fixed too

I really don't mind your everyday, plain, basic banner ad. I've grown used to them and just ignore them (like the SPEED LIMIT 30 signs :) ). I really hate the screaming, flashing, use-every-single-neon-color-in-the-pallette ads. Do people think they really work? Do the advertisers think we're a bunch of ferrets who'll go after any shiny object? It's like those commercials on TV where some middle aged balding business owner has the "brilliant" idea that the way to get customers to his latest sale is to scream at the top of his lungs for thirty seconds about how CC-RRRRRR-AAAAA-ZZZZZZ-YYYYYYY he is and how you'd be CC-RRRRRR-AAAAA-ZZZZZZ-YYYYYYY not to take advantage of it. That's why they invented the mute button on the remote! I never go down to "Crazy Mel's" because of the ads, and I will never click on a screaming, flashing banner!

Sorry, it's just and ENORMOUS pet peeve of mine!

i mean, without the banners HERE, do you really think these forums would be FREE.
