Does anyone else hate handling raw fish?

I have no problem with eating or handling sushi, or eating or handling cooked fish. I can't, however, stand to deal with something like raw Tilapia filets. To me it is just beyond nasty and I hate the smell and texture. I love seafood, but I really can never seriously prepare it without almost getting sick.

I grew up doing it. My grandfather owned a huge fish and shrimp company (with the actual boats that go out and get it) that was worth like 11 million when he sold it. I worked for him every summer doing it. On top of that, living in florida for the early years of my life, I did it much.

I do hate the smell on yours hands though, but there are ways to get it off.

Why did you feel the need to add in the networth of your grandfathers company?

Not really, I just treat it as any other meat. If it really smells bad, you have spoiled fish. Fish should only smell like seawater, not fish.

If I can't find fresh fish, I buy it in vacuum sealed frozen packages.

hmm...wonderful slimy raw fish. Sometimes I feel like biting a chunk out of it like Gollum.

lol. I'm not saying I am rich, far from it, just giving an idea of how big the company was, so I did a lot of fish handling.

I once spent an entire day slicing a few hundred pounds of halibut into 6-oz portions after a successful fishing trip in Alaska. I actually kind of enjoyed it - fish seems really clean to me somehow.

Of course it's clean, it just came out of the water.

In fact most fish spend a lot of time there. ;)

I think he means that while he's handling it, life seems a lot simpler. :)

I used to work in the seafood department at the market. So I'm used to it. I'd rather handle raw fish than meat.

:Q

I haven't had a problem with it so far, but then I've only bought tuna, shark, swordfish, and salmon. White fish like tilapia might be a different story, but they should still never smell like anything but seawater.

I've worked on a lobster boat before, I did nothing but scoop handfulls of dead herring into bait bags, so I think I'm over any raw fish issues :)

I'd much rather handle the filets than posing with a flopping walleye for a picture.
