Does anyone else fall victim to game hype?

I had no intention of buying Black Ops, but dammit, this stupid hype has me thinking about it. I mean, I loved Modern Warfare 2, but I got tired of it and sold it on amazon when they had a killer trade-in value for it like 9 months later.

On top of that, I bought Halo Reach on release day and I barely get time to play that.

Although, if it weren't for hype, I wouldn't have played games like Mass Effect 1/2, Red Dead Redemption and many others.

My most recent "hype purchase" was Kinect with Dance Central, which I don't regret one bit. That game is a blast.

My name is Tim, and I too am video game hype buyer.

Although, honestly, without all the discounts retailers have been offering on pre-orders and such, I would have waited for a good deal 😉

Still have MW2? If you trade it towards Blops at Gamestop you'll get $33 in credit for it.

EA used to take advantage of my extreme need for NFL football and as a result, I bought Madden every year due to the hype and the fact I had been without football for months. Not this year, however. 😀

I used to, but then I thought "Wait a minute, why do I have 4 or 5 brand new games and still haven't finished these 4 others?"
By the time I'd get to the fancy new hype game, the online would've already died down or worse, the next year's version would already be on the near horizon.
I'm trying to pound through every game I buy now before moving on. Although COD is one that's nice to get in on right off the bat, so you're not left totally behind online.

No I don't give in to hype. I always wait until there's a beta/demo out. If I can't play the game before hand I won't buy it. Too many games within the past couple years that get high ratings I thought were extremely overrated so I take high scores with a grain of salt. I will buy Gran Turismo 5 on launch though as I bought the "demo".

my last mistake was buying RDR for multiplayer knowing i hated GTA4 multiplayer.

at least the single player saved it.

I get hyped, but not enough to purchase the games. Almost every game I've been hyped for in the past few years have fallen by the wayside.

Yeah, I get sucked into it sometimes.

I really didn't have much interest in the new CoD, but the launch hype has gotten me thinking about it.

I fall victim to insanely cheap games on steam, MS Live Games, and EA Store:

In the last couple of months I bought

L4D+L4D2 for 10 bucks
FEAR 2 for 5
Borderlands for 7
Bad Company 2 13 bucks

whole buncha of others i feel too ashamed to name

screw paying 60 bucks for Black Ops when I have soooooo many games to catch up on and play

I'm not big on hype. Just like anything else, they gotta work out the bugs first. If I get Black Ops, it'll probably be for commie zombies. Online multiplayer FPS is getting really worn out.

Me three. Also went for that L4D deal, for $5/game you can't really go wrong. I totally missed that FEAR 2 deal, would've gone for that. Steam holiday sale is the best time for indulgence.

Stalker SoC & Clear Sky for $7 total
Bioshock for $5
Crysis Complete for $14

GTA games have never been about multiplayer. That was just plain stupid.

There are only a few games I bought based on hype. Black and White, probably the most overrated game of all time. RDR, way overrated to me. Mass Effect, which wasn't bad at all but I never really got into it much.

I did for Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2.
For shooters I never do. The harder they push the more I know the game sucks ass and they are overcompensating with ads.
