Does anyone drink wine for health-related reasons?

Apparently, red wine has a whole bunch of benefits for your health.

So this weekend I bought one of those vacuum-sealed boxes of red wine from one of the nicer package stores in my area. I bought the one recommended by the guy at the counter, who has always been knowledgeable and helpful with my alcoholic selections.

Does red wine always taste that bad? Is there anything I can do to make it better (i.e. chill it, don't chill it, take it with certain foods, etc.)? Last night my wife and I had it at room temperature, and it was awful. Maybe it is an acquired taste that has to be developed over time?

Benefits of drinking red wine has been known for centuries. As far as the taste, I love it. Well, I love all wines, including Gluhwein 🙂

Mmmm...wine...

Umm if you want better tasting wine then you might want to go for something not contained in a bladder 😀

HA! Box of wine........
Spend a couple of bucks (~$8) on a decent bottle.

If you have a costco nearby, they have some excellent selections for very little money.

The guy at the store said that you had to drink a bottle pretty quickly (in 3 days) or it would turn to vinegar, whereas the box is vacuum sealed and should last a month. We're not drinking the stuff for a buzz, so we're only drinking small amounts each night.

I had a bottle with my dinner last night. You get maybe 3-4 glasses out of a bottle.
Have 2 glasses with your dinner and the bottle is empty in 2 days.

I see no reason to drink wine purly for the heath benifits. You can get the same effect from grape juice and other foods. If you like wine thats great, but don't drink it if you don't.

My doctor told me to have a glass of wine with dinner but I don't like wine. We compromised on a shot of JD instead.

umm, health, yea, that's why...

On the other note, for those of you who don't actively drink red wine you should keep your mouth shut about the boxes of wine. There are several very good wines available in boxes. In fact you can get the exact same $8 bottles you are talking about in a box for about 1/2 the price of the bottle. The corks are running almost half the cost of those bottles right now and eliminating them allows the wineries to sell them at much lower prices. And since those wines are NOT aged in the bottle, they are sent to the store immediately after bottling, there is no added benifit to the bottle

If you think that red wine tastes so horrible, I have two questions for you. First, have you drank much red before? It does have a more aggresive taste then those grape juice flavored whites or blushes.

And second, what was the brand and type of wine. Some have more aggresive tastes than others, and like anything some brands are just plain bad.

Never get wine in a box. I have kept an opened bottle of wine for over a month, just by putting the cork back in it when not drinking it.

Get a decent Austrailian Shiraz and drink it with some red meat. The combination of favors compliment each other well.
Wine is a bit of an acquired taste. You might want to start wine drinking with a blush (pinkish color), which has less tannens and tends to be fruitier. I enjoy most white merlots and white zinfindels.

This is my first wine experience. I don't know the brand (I'm at work right now), and all I can remember is that it is from California.

Supposedly the major health benefits come from red wine because of something that is added to it during the manufacturing process that whites and blushes don't have. I don't have a link for this fact, but it is something my wife read.
