I just realized this while filling up. I've heard of regular cars that only need regular unleaded, and high performance cars that require premium. So what kind of cars require at least medium grade? I don't seem to hear about them.

93 only for me. I don't know what that shit is there, although I'm sure there's some logical/rational reason.

I know right, I have always thought of this. Like who the fuck uses 89. I guess people at higher altitudes? IDK

I always use premium

Costco doesn't even carry the middle one, they don't carry diesel too sadly :(

Sam's does, but doesn't make it worth it to me.

you can thank 89 octane for driving up the prices of 87 and 93. it places increased demands on the 87 stock and 93 additives.

Sure, lots of people do since it's priced lower per gallon (at least in the midwest) since it's we only have the ethanol-blended crap or straight 87.

My car is happy with 87 octane. But on my brothers truck he prefers to run 89 octane.

89 is the preferred fuel for my 5.7L hemi, 87 is okay to use, according to the manual.

A number of high(ish) compression NA engines use it, a Volvo 5cyl for example, and I *think* some low-boost turbo engines.

I used to put it in my 85 vette when it was around $2.00 gal but for the last 10 years or so it's been strictly 87 for me.

5.7L Engines (If Equipped)
The 5.7L engine is designed to meet all
emissions regulations and provide satisfactory
fuel economy and performance when
using high quality unleaded gasoline having
an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufacturer
recommends the use of 89 octane
for optimum performance. The use of premium gasoline
is not recommended. Under normal conditions, the use of
premium gasoline will not provide a benefit over high
quality regular and mid-grade gasolines, and in some
circumstances may result in poorer performance.
Light spark knock at low engine speeds is not harmful to
your engine. However, continued heavy spark knock at
high speeds can cause damage and immediate service is
required.

I was mixing midgrade with premium ((93+89)/2 = 91, minimum required) on my turboed subaru when I was broke. I don't do it anymore though.
