It would be a rather dubious task, and quite costly. I recommend Sager Notebooks. You can buy them direct, or from powernotebooks.com

If you don't need the latest greatest biggest and fastest then you can get a GREAT one from ebay for $300 - $400. If you want new then just wait for Dell to have another super deal again...I recall something like a 1.8 Ghz model going for about $800 after a rebate or two. Building one is pretty much out of the question since they are so engineered to fit together - the parts aren't all generic...
