Does anybody remember a new fundamental science from an obscure sci-fi book?

Sometimes the best sci-fi ideas are in books that nobody knows about. I was wondering if anybody came across an obscure sci-fi book that created its own field of fundamental science alongside electromagnetism, gravity and atoms. Can anyone think of any examples?
