Does anybody know: is it bad to disable the "ScanRegistry" startup utility in Win98?

I am having a wierd issue. About half the time I start my computer the "ScanRegistry" routine says it finds an error in the system registry - and that it will restart to fix it.

Whatever the hell it tries to change isnt very effective because it still frequently gives the same error message upon the next startup. But sometimes it actually starts up without the error message - even in this case the problem sometimes come back in the next restart.

If I disallow it to restart windows, everything seems to operate fine.

Question: Are there any potential problems with turning off the registry scanning utility? Alternatively, how can I repair the registry so that it will quit giving me the same error every time I start up.

I would really appreciate some help with this one!

ScanRegistry is part of the DOS scanreg program, which makes backup copies of the last 4 known good registries on the first boot of the day. While I've never encountered any problems with it disabled, I'd personally try to figure out why it's telling you your registry is corrupt in the first place. But to answer your question, no it shouldn't cause any problems, but it won't automatically backup your registry anymore either.

Rendus,

It happened the first time when I tried to install a hacked copy of Bryce4.

When I got the error message I decided to remove the program entirely. After uninstalling it I restarted and I still got the error message. After restarting about 3 more times it finally stopped giving me the error message.

Then I tried restarting again and the registry error was back. So then I went to regedit and removed every reference to Bryce4. This didnt do anything.

So then I unselected "ScanRegistry" in msconfig and everything is working now.

How do I even go about trying to analyze what is wrong with the registry? Is there a log somewhere that gives details about the problem? The error message doesnt give me the option to learn more - it only has a single button that says "OK."

Prolly doesnt do any good now, but I'd manually make a copy of the reg before you make any significant changes to your system so you can replace it if something gets screwed up. ie, dont rely on windows

The errors seem to typically be due to duplicate keys in the registry, etc. No, there are no logs or anything of what the problem is that I'm aware of. Like stated above, you can try a scanreg /fix, but I've never actually seen it FIX anything :) Not going to hurt though.
