You have the expansion pack?

If so, get the koreans, upgrade your onagers to the max stats, research all techs for them, and then send in about 30 of them, escorted by about 100 pikemen/halbadiers. And, for good measure, follow it up with about 40 war carts 🙂

Use the onagers to destroy the walls in short time, march in the pikemen/halberdiers to take on the cataphracts, and then send in the war carts to clean up 🙂

By by byzantines.

Another good civ would be the turks - build a bunch of bombard cannons, jannisaries, and camels.

Use the bombard cannons to take out towers/walls/trebochets, march in the camels to melee with the cataphracts, and then send in the jannisaries for mop up.

I want to say that I've been playing age of empires since 1997, and competively in rated games on the zone since 1998 so I'm not just shooting hot air. In Aoe2, your choice of civs should not matter too much as most of the civs are balanced if you disregard teutons and brits. With conq, the balancing has improved a bit with those two civs. But anyway, strats cannot help you if you cannot execute properly.

Ask yourself these questions. If you can't say yes to any of them, I'd go and try to practice somemore because those are the basic skills a player needs to be competitive when playing online.

- Can you maintain a constant and unending flow of villagers from when the game starts all the way to the castle or imperial age (depending on what you want to do)?
- Are there any idled villagers at any time during the game?
- Do you know what counter units to use when your opponent comes at you with an offensive attack?
- Do you know the strengths and weaknesses of every civ?
- Are your hands constantly busy during the entire part of the game?
- Do you force the action?

damocles, i saw that thread and it sucked ass. but I never expect anandtechers to play serious rts. most people here play fps more which makes sense i guess since all the hardware geeks love to show off their computers by playing games that actually makes use of powerful computers and video cards.

ANYWAY...
To have a sucessful rush, you MUST have a good mix of units to counter the units that you're opponent uses to counter your units. If you send in rams to take down walls or town centers, he'll come at you with camels and pikes (since he is byz). Counter with archers and forward town centers. If he counters that with skirmishers and rams, then you send in knights. As you can notice, there is a lot of back and forth going on. All things being equal, the winner is usually the one who can execute the best and rush with different units that compliment each other.

I'm not going to say something silly like just send in 30 paladins or 100 champions because I'm assuming that you're playing random map games and those units won't be availible to you until imperial age.

Another thing to consider also is that if you're opponent is fortifying himself in, he's leaving much of the map open for expansion to you. It is crucial to your success that you take advantage of this fact and BOOM everywhere so that you can be economically superior than him. So while he's eating up the little resources that's left in his town, you have the rest of the map to feed your army. I've had games where I've lost more units than my opponent yet I've won handily because I could AFFORD to lose so many units and still keep the rush going strong. AOK is a very defensive game and it is not uncommon for the defender to be able to defend his base and spend less resource than his opponent.

Heh, for me the most important part of that other post was my icq and offer to play whenever 🙂 I think i am a pretty major RTS player (especially of warcraft 2), although i like FPS and Sims etc.

I find rushing harder in AOE2 Conquerors than in straight AOE2 (not sure why). Generally i try to fortify in go hard on the resourcing, getting techs ASAP. I usually play Persians so if i can get a small number of Elephants quickly I can devaste a city surprisingly fast. Its all a gamble though, i can be left a little embarassed when a bunch of feudal troops come running at my base.

If you ever want to play icq 7791487
