I do have a HDD with winxp pro sp1a loaded on the shelf just in case, so that's not a problem.

But what about analog / digital synth , would it be a good idea for an equipment noob to get one ? Would it take too much skill to do at least what the guy did in the video ?
I am looking at a budget of 200 - 500 give or take, all I want to do is be able to make some decent tunes, I am not going pro or aiming at making a career out of all of this, it's just something I have wanted to do since ever.

Hi, I'm popping in here cuz ya asked me to.

I didn't do any true professional producing of tracks. I only made some loops and small cuts to press to vinyl so I could play them out at my gigs.

When you have a low budget the best thing to do is get a lot of software and a few key hardware components. You will NEED a high quality sound card, with multiple XLR, 1/4" and MIDI in/output and control. You will also need a good mixer, preferrably a minimum of 8 tracks.
High quality studio monitors and headphones are must as well.

The piece you linked to in that video seems to be a production workstation or just a sequencer with a sampler/filters builtin. Sometimes thoes are a good place to start, but on a limited budget you will be scrimping in places you shouldn't if you buy one of thoes.

When my friends and I were heavy into djing professinally we primarily used software and a few pieces of hardware. We made 99% of our own samples. We used a lot of traktor, reason, soundforge, fruitloops and hundreds if not thousands of plug-in filters. The hardware was typically a behringer mixer, an oldschool 909 drum machine, a drum machine called "the machine drum", and oldschool 303, and a few midi samplers/controllers. The vast majority of actual production was done on software, we typically didn't do any live PA's and just pressed tracks to dj.

I could talk for hours on specifics of different aspects of production, though I'm no true professional. Though in my opinion your best bet is using mostly software with a few pieces of hardware for a unique sound. Try to pick up vintage equipment, nothing can beat it. If you wanna talk further, PM me or we can get on irc.

Reason 3 + MIDI keyboard FTW :)

As for hardware being phased out, when you use Reason, you'll see why. Essentially, it is a full and very detailed audio rack that looks and feels just like the real thing.

But you see, as in that video, the track was produced in real time, ofcourse took him some practice to get it perfect, but the things you can do at the same time on a sequencer such as the Electribe will take much more time to do on Reason and will be done in baby steps, how do I know ? All of my mixing is done in such software ATM and I know the effort it takes me to do such things as in the video via software.

Plus I know a good guy who owns a nice coffe shop and he kindly allows amatures play whenever someone comes to him with something respectable enough to be heared he just lets him / her / them (as in a band) play on a given night in there, and since I know everyone around I thougt it wouldn't be bad if I gave it a shot after I develop some skills.

I see him everyday, as I hangout at his place almost everyday, so I went to his office today and forced him to listen (YA he is not a big fan of electronic music :p) to some of my best trance track's edits and mixes and TBH he had no problem giving me permession to play any time , but I don't want to just go in and play some pre-recorded mixes infront of my friends and such, I want to do live tracks for the most part and play pre-recorded mixes here and there for like an hour or two.

I'd suggest going to the place where you can buy this equipment and test things out....

i've never used the korg, but i have a Yamaha cs1x, and i would definitely recommend it as a dance/trance synth. you can probably find one for pretty cheap now

one of my friends does trance.. i believe he has a korg electribe.. so maybe you can ask him about it. his website is http://www.ffmusic.net/

I have never worked on a synth before, but I have seen some people work on some before, maybe this video will give good picture about what I am considering buying .

- I use Audacity to mix my tracks would that be a problem ?
- Will using Linux as an OS be a problem for using a device such as the KORG electribe MX be a problem ?
- Is it a good idea for a begginer to buy a device such as the Electribe ? What would you recommend ?
- Are there any other equipment that I should be looking at ?

I make stuff using logic and pro tools and a midi keyboard, that is pretty much all you need unless you get really serious. I'm not too much into hardware, I think it's getting phased out.

Are those what you have mentioned above software only ? What do you use to generate your own tunes / beats (other than the MIDI Keyboard) ?

I don't know a lot of ppl who generate their own beats at this point, there are millions of beat samples, everything else can be made with a keyboard.

Oh man just went to the store after my 1st day of the spring semester.
I first called them up, and they told me that they do have the KORG electribe MX on display hooked up and everything, and that I can go there and give it a shot.

OH man, the dude there was an A+ salesman, he gave me a sht load of pointers and gave me a 1 hour hands on training free eventhough he knew I am not buying it !
I showed him the google video on his computer and he looked at it carefully, then we went back to the Electribe MX and gave it a shot, I was stunned it's a master piece !!!

You can just sit there 24/7 and always come up with something different, I was this close to buying it , then I said to myself $ 499.99 isn't a joke, even though that machine is everything that I ever wanted, I needed to browse around for prices before I jump on the buy.

To keep it short, the Electribe MX is stunning the sound quality is kick ass, the features are endless, it's perfect for live performances and what not.

If I don't find anything better online, I will have to get it form the store, I will try to see if they will push the price down a bit.
Does anybody think I can get a cheaper deal on a new Korg Electribe MX ?
