In Chicago, years ago (1970's), there was street racing in the park at Lawrence Ave and the lake. The Chicago police would be paid off (drop your change into a grocery box) and would block off the entrances to the park from midnight until dawn on Saturday nights. It was "run what ya brung". The only "rule" was that if you had to trailer it in you had to go west to Elston Ave. to race. There would typically be around 50 cars racing and hundreds of "spectators". A lot of money changed hands, but not like Outlaws, maybe $200-500. The fun was side bets on the races. Then at dawn, Maxwell Street for shopping and pork chop sandwiches!
