Does antialiasing+anisotropic filtering improve 2D game quality? (eg. Rise of Nations / Warcraft 3)

I'm just wondering if anti-alising or anisotropic filtering improves the quality of the graphics in games such as Rise of Nations or Warcraft 3.

Perhaps my eyes are deceiving me, but when I enable 16xS AA (I think thats the highest AA for an nVidia card?) and 16xAF, it appears as though Rise of Nations looks considerably better.

However, it could just be my eyes deceiving me...

If AA/AF does NOT improve the graphics in these games, is there anything I COULD enable in the drivers to improve the graphics?

Thanks...

Any game that uses 3D rendered objects as opposed to sprites will benefit.

RON, WC3, C&C Generals, will all benefit.

Starcraft will not. :p

All games mentioned so far in this thread are 3d games and will benefit from antialiasing and aniso, dont know how much aniso will help in these types of games though.

AF won't help much for top-down or isometric views AKA Warcraft 3 but leave it on anyway.

It will also depend on the desktop res...if you are running above 12x10 you probably wont be able to see any marked difference.
