first, is yours retail?
if yes, just try to get rma.
if no, if you made the purchase with credit card with purchase protection, let them eat it.
if you didn't, ask the vendor if they want to eat it.
if they don't, you eat it.

<< actually, its impossible to install the heatsink w/ the fan attached, you have to install the heatsink first then the fan... >>

I must be a freakin genius then😀

lol. nevermind the cpu works now. cracked, yes, but as long as it works i dont care 🙂

use a copper shim, you can get an annodized one for only $4.50 from bestbyte, ive got one on both my tbird and duron. it makes it a lot safer and im not scared to take my fops on and off anymore.

lol 😛

heh, he didn't seat the shim properly..

", I guess the shim must have shifted onto one of the pads when I was attaching the FOP-38, so therefore the heatsink itself wasn't making contact with the CPU and BANG. That was it."

Most people put a dab of glue, or you can use the 'cool-shim' that has a sticky side.. i'd recommend it also because it's not copper. some people just make silly mistakes..

you know there are some heatsinks that have to be installed wihtout the fan right? then the fan goes on, since you dont seem to know about the alpha's have you ever installed a retail P III 1 Ghz? note how it is impossible to install the heatsink with the fan on? you must install the heatsink THEN the fan

I've done it before 🙂 Sucked tho.

Hmmm... I installed the fan first on my Alpha 6035. I guess alot has to do with clearance issues on the mobo. I could see how someone would hold off on installing the fan if it meant a capacitor could be knocked off.

Rifter,

I think you are the one who "dont seem to know about the alpha's". I as well as others have done the "impossible". Now, I have to go back and work on my cure for the common cold.😀

Okay if you don't put on a heatsink on right on any chip your going to damage the cpu core. And INTEL nor AMD will replace something like that under warranty, why??? Cause the user did not do the proper install of the heatsink.

I believe in US, every manufacturer just gives you a new or refurb immediately when you request for rma. They're very generous, and they don't want to waste time to check your stuff - time is money. They just check if it's within warranty period.

Anybody has done so with retail cpu can confirm this?

depends on company.

larger ones will scan them and look in the database to see if it is the same cpu, and then may or may not physically inspect it.

but at my old bunk job, they would just replace it as long as it looked okay, prolly would not notice a chipped corner. no check to see if the serial numbers matched ;p

AMD hs excellent warranty/customer service. i broke my athlon 1.1 and i just called them up, and told them the problem. That guy was cool about it and game me a service number, then told me to fax them the reciept for the retail cpu. then they later email me with shipping instructions and 2 weeks later, i got upgraded to a 1.2 cpu. But with a cracked core i dont know if they will go for it.

LXi! Don't be so brutal man! 🙂

I agree if you are carefull, it is REALLY hard to break.... But it is entirely posseble that the Mfg. made a mistake on that CPU.... However, AMD Core's are Weaker than intels.

I dunno, I am a really good tech at least I reguard myself as one, and even I am scared of taking off/putting on those heatsinks on Athlons... I mean taking it off/on every so often is fine... but excessive on/off scares the hell outa me, esp if I dont have a reason... just a slip and CRACK!

Anyways Sorry to hear your duron is dead, but look at the bright side, the CPU is only 80 bucks or so.... it could be worse...
