Does AMD have a chipset of their own?

I know that Intel makes chipsets for the CPU's that they use, but does AMD also do this or do they rely on VIA to make the chipsets for use with their CPU's?

yeah, amd makes their own.. before intel made their own, via/sis/umc/etc. used to make theirs.. but the problem was compatiblilty so intel started to design their own..

AMD has some chipset but I don't know why they dont spend the time perfecting it like intel...

Irongate(AMD750), and the new DDR chipset(AMD760) are both designed and produced by AMD themselves. But their real strength is still VIA.

AMD creates chipsets to support the launch of their new processors, as well as support new features. However, they rely on 3rd party chipset manufacturers, such as VIA, ALi and SiS to design/manufacture/mass produce their own chipsets to support AMD's processors. Chipset manufacturing is not a big business for AMD.

AMD does not have enough funding or plants to manufature their own chipsets. So they are only introducing it with initial CPU launch and then leaves it to VIA/SIS/ALi.

As of this time AMD would rather focus on the CPUs and leave the chipsets more up to 3rd part companies and it makes perfect sense.... what good is it if they make chipsets but they don't sell many CPUs? So right now they devote most their time and resources to Flash Memory and CPUs.

You be suprised how much it cost to produce & develop something... look at 3dfx.. they're gone now.. start doing everything themselves.... it's too bad everything is so costly
