Does Amazon take responsibility for delivery?

Late last week I ordered a $50 book from Amazon and I guess it wasn't a book they stock because they did not offer free shipping on it. It was shipped out of Kansas USPS (w/ tracking) and supposedly delivered here on Tuesday. The address on the receipt was correct so I am pretty sure they sent it to the correct address however I never got the package. I have received many things via USPS and UPS which were left on my porch and I have never had a missing package problem. I doubt anyone actually came and stole it but regardless, I do not have the book and I am out $50 at the moment. I called the post office today and they said they do not have anything for my address that was undeliverable and suggested I call in the morning to speak to the carrier to see if he remembers anything. I tend to think they may have just left it at the wrong house but whatever the reason was, it doesn't seem like I will get it back. Has anyone run into this problem before? I want to know if Amazon will be nice and resend the book taking responsibility for the delivery or will I just end up having to pay another $50 for another order (I sure hope not)?

USPS actually does have tracking numbers and they actually are getting better too, they do not only tell you when the package was shipped, they also tell you were it is, like UPS and FedEX.
