Does AM2+ listed on motherboard envelop all AM2+ processors?

Have an HP computer with a M2N78-LA (Geforce 8200 chipset) and came with a Phenom 8650. Processor slot is an AM2+ and I was curious if I could just swap in a Phenom II 940, or if I needed to follow what it said on the website about it only supporting up to a 9700 series processor. I'll more than understand if I'm stuck with that, but was just curious.

Thanks.

Some mobos don't have powerful enough VRMs to support the faster processors. You risk burning out the mobo.

That's cool, is there any sort of program to check the voltage settings the motherboard can handle? HP's site isn't too giving with the details on a lot of this stuff.

No, there's no software reporting mechanism on the design and implementation of the mobo's VRM section. :p

You will also need a BIOS upate. Looks like it's an Asus board, so most likely it has adequate VRMs. And it also looks like HP ships Phenom 9850s with this particular board, so Phenom II should also work since the 9850 needs more power than Phenom II.
