does alcohol make you dumber or affect short-term memory?

If I drink heavily at night I'm not quite as sharp the next morning. If I have one or two drinks then I feel fine the next day.

probably depends greatly on the quantity consumed.

getting blasted at the occasional party? probably not.

getting hammered once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once before bed every day? yeah, safe bet. ;)

It really doesn't matter if it makes you dumber or affects short-term memory. I'm going to do it anyway :)

I know that chronic alcohol abuse has all sorts of memory and executive functioning repercussions (in the form of Korsakoff's syndrome). Not sure of the effects of anything shy of that, though.

The study you cited seems to say it does, but it also only used a website-based self-report questionnaire as its measure of memory, apparently. I'd like to see the use of a more directly memory-related task to further support those findings.

@ 18 I drank a bunch of beers, vodka at a party and I don't see whats so great about alcohol. Sure, some cold beer tastes ok, but so are a lot of other things :)

What?? Who gets hammered 3 times in one day? If you're that big of a drinker, it would be a day long drinkfest resulting in one "hammering". I can't imagine anyone would wake up, slam a bunch of beers, then allow themselves to sober up, only to drink heavily again in the afternoon, and then repeat the cycle once more for the evening. LOL

Drinking alcohol makes you smarter.

As Cliff Claven says:

Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
