from what i hear, it depends on your service provider. some require them, some don't. you should probably call up your provider and see if they provide a static ip. if not, there's not point in running it. but if you do have it running and it is actually obtaining an ip address from your provider, it's probably required.

its not DHCP you are asking about, its PPPoE. Its somewhat the same thing except with PPPoE aDSL its like of like reg dialup where you get a new ip everytime you connect to the server. Also, you can't disable it and it doesn't slow down startup (of what?).

It may be static, but the "static i.p." sits at the router. :)

Internally you are probably using a NAT. This is fine for most uses, but cannot support old DirectPlay-based videogames such as Total Annihilation. The problem is NAT shows the outside world a different port and i.p. address, which is good for your computer's security.

You typically have to buy a range of 5 ip's in order to put truly static ip's on your machines.
