Does active duty military ride the NYC subway for free?

I know a military ID will get you a free ride in Boston, but I wasn't sure about NYC. Anyone know?

Grand Central handles the Metro North trains, they might not know about the subways

So if I'm going to the city for a couple days should I get a metro card or just buy tokens each time? I have no idea how it works.

get a metrocard. tokens were phased out a few years ago

Depending on how long you say and how many trips on the subways and bus you take, you might want to consider an unlimted card (comes in weekly, monthly and daily fun pass). Otherwise pay-per-ride cards are good, buy 10 rides get 1 free.

The only group of people that I know that can ride free on subways are probably MTA employees and little kids, school kids(with their subsidized student metrocards). Senior citizens get a discount, but they gotta apply for a special metrocard with their picture on it. As far as I know military gets no discount.

Speaking of student metrocards, the student metrocards marked the end of the free ride all damn day deal for kids. sigh. i remember when i could take as many rides as a i wanted each day. but when the metrocard came, we were limited to only 3. sigh.
