Does activation fee apply if phone is purchase directly throug Apple?

Yeah, the fee isn't paid to Apple, it's paid to AT&T or whatever cell provider you're using. It's hilarious they charge you $20 just to type in your particulars and scan the phone into the computer.

They sure didn't when I signed up. The lady I spoke with on the phone said they were, but when I got to the store and even tried online.. they said that it excluded the iPhones.
