Does AC3 maintain the exact audio stream of a Wav file?

Just wondering. Is there any audio compression method that maintains an exact copy of a wav.

Check out this site. Current reviews of all currently available lossless compression schemes. Many are freeware. And AC3 (aka Dolby Digital) is lossy compression, i.e., the exact data is not maintained.

edit: the best compression ratio that can be acheived using current lossless encoders is not quite 2:1, so your compressed files will still be approx. 60% of their original size.
