Does a wireless router need to be attached to a computer to function?

Hello, is it possible to set up a wireless router in one location, then remove the computer to which it was originally attached to? Leaving only the router attached to the DSL modem?

I want to move my computer to the living room, but there is no network sockets there. Anyone?

A wireless router can use wired or wireless connections as long as you setup the wireless properly and your have good signal strength. You dont need any computers connected to the router can just use the modem and router and you wireless devices.

Keep in mind you will need to connect it back to update the firmware. Not a big deal, main point is don't try and update the firmware over wireless or your be begging for a brick.

Yeah, always keep a spare network cable and learn how to use iit through wire.

Otherwise, sooner or later you would get Stuck.

Isn't this sort of the point of a wireless router?

You'd actually be surprised at how many people have the misconception that a computer has to act as a "base" station for the wireless router.

Thankfully most of them just ask a technically oriented friend who can set them straight 🙂

Because of the Lame CD that comes with Entry Level Routers many users perceive the situation as a Router installed on a computer.

A Wireless Cable/DSL Router is actually a mini computer with a switch and a Wireless Hub in the same plastic box, it is part of the Network just like any other computer is.

If you have two cars in your garage one is that one car is installed on the other, it just two cars in the same Garage, and you can jump from one to the other.
