Hello everyone,
Being that this is my first post, I would first like to say what a great site this is. I'm learning new things everytime I log on, and the members of this site (not to mention the stellar articles) are a large reason for that. I decided to join not only to support Anandtech, but to ask a question that I couldn't find searching.
Currently, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. I use it for internet surfing, word processing, and playing Unreal 2004 (in case you were wondering, I play it at 640x480 resolution and low graphics settings). The 600m only has two USB ports and no PS/2 ports. When I used to play Unreal, I would use a N52 controller and a MX510 mouse. However, I recently received a Logitech USB microphone as a gift, and in order to use it, I will have to get a USB hub of some kind.
I have a total of 5 USB devices and only 2 USB ports. Here they are:
1 - Used during Gaming: Belkin Nostromo GamePad n52
2 - Used during Gaming: Logitech MX-510 Mouse
3 - Used during Gaming: Logitech USB Desktop Microphone
4 - NOT used during Gaming: Logitech Elite USB Keyboard
5 - NOT used during Gaming: HP Deskject 3740 Printer
So, with those five devices and only two USB ports, I was thinking about using a four-way USB hub, like this one. I would connect the gamepad, keyboard, printer, and microphone to the hub and the one USB port, and use the other USB port only for my mouse. My questions are:
1) Will I experience any interference during games? I don't think there should be any problems with the mouse (because it will have it's own direct port), but what about interference between the microphone and gamepad?
2) More generally, will I be able to use two devices at the same time (such as the keyboard and printer) on the hub without experiencing any interference?
3) If there will not be any conflicts, should I get an USB hub that requires power, or should I use one that does not require any power? What is the difference between the two performance wise?
4) If there will be conflicts with that setup, is there anything else I could do besides not use the microphone? For example, are there adapters that would allow me to use the USB microphone into a standard microphone jack (which the 600m has)?
Thanks for reading, and Happy New Year!
