Does a USB 3.0 port on a case front support USB 3.1 gen 2 connections?

Questions in the title really, if a case says it has a USB 3.0 connection on the front and I connect that to a 3.1 gen 2 motherboard header will the port support it?

Yes, in theory if its just a passive cable with a connector in the other end. I wouldn't count on it though, 10Gbit USB3.1 is notoriously fickle with cable quality. Generally, you shouldn't expect to more of it then about 1 metre without a very high quality cable. Keep in mind this is including both internal and external cable length.

You'll need an adaptor from the new 20-pin header to the regular 19-pin one though. Silverstone also has two 10Gbit USB3.1 cards (the ECU04 and ECU04-E) which feature the regular 19-pin connector.

Ok thanks, rather than losing a pci slot would it be feasible to replace the port on the case with a new spec one?

I suppose that depends on the case. Some do have provision for replacing the USB ports.

An easier, and quicker, alternative is a USB front panel for a free 5.25" or 3.5" bay. Assuming you have one of those of course.

That might be an easier way to go, I was thinking of a PCI rear panel which wouldn't have worked but front might be a solution if needed.
