Does a tripod work with EVERY camera?

My dad already has a tripod for his old-school Pentax camera. Can I use the same tripod for the Nikon Coolpix 5700? (I wanna buy that digi-cam)

Should work, I'm pretty sure the thread size is standard for consumer grade tripods. The one I have works on all 4 of our cameras (film and digital) and my DV Camera.
 
They make the tripods and the cameras with a standard size, so there's a very good chance you can use the tripod with multiple things.
