Does a standard layout keyboard without a numpad exist?

(well, such a layout wouldn't be "standard" but I want something close!)

I'm looking for a somewhat compact keybaord for my wife.

Ideally it would have a completely standard layout and no numpad. The space saved by having no numpad, which neither she nor I ever use, would help it fit on her keyboard tray with a mouse.

Does anybody know if such a thing exists?

I don't care for the micro layouts - they're too tight. :-/

I thought most non-keypad keyboards were smaller than normal keyboards..

I expect you're correct. However, I have yet to discover a "nonkeypad" keyboard that has an otherwise standard type of layout (with arrow keys, pg up/down, etc in the usual position, normal sized tab and enter keys, normal size function keys).

Such a thing might exist but I'm having a heck of a time finding one online and there was nothing like this at Fry's.

Well, those all minis... and most of them don't have keypads.

The closest I can think to what you want is the Logitech DiNovo with a separate keypad that you can get rid of, but it's a wireless desktop set.

Yeah, we were just looking at the micro/slim stuff on newegg. I think we're gonna hit Frys and buy her one to try (and see if she can handle the tighter layout and slightly different key placements).

I don't really want to spend to get a wireless set since she doesn't really need it (while I do have that kind of gear for my programming/gaming rig

There's nothing wrong with having a numpad... I have a keyboard tray and both my keyboard (full-sized) and my mouse (a large one) fits in here comfortably. Or, you could also try a trackball as a mice to be space-saving; there's nothing wrong with them (I like them, but I can't get used to it).

Check out the 'Mighty Mouse' model:
- Classic IBM key action (buckling-spring key switches).
- Sans numpad.
- Expensive at $99.

This is the classic typists keyboard.
