Does a refrigerator "degrade"?

There's a guy selling a 3-year-old refrigerator. He says it's not been in use (unplugged) for most of that time.

Is this really the same as saying it's almost new, or does a modern fridge "degrade" even as it just sits around (presumably inside a house or SoCal garage)?

I would look it over... if any of the lines have rusted or anything it is probably no good.
