Does a Radeon 8500dv need a fan?

This fan broke & no receipt as I sent it in for a rebate(yes, stupid).

It is making the most annoying sound so I unplugged it. Does it really need a fan? If so, what's the best way of replacing the fan on the chipset?

Thank you.

If it came with a fan, then it needs a fan. A manufacturer would not waste that kind of money on meaningless things.

You could probably use a fan off of an older Radeon card. I swapped a fan from an original Radeon to an 8500LE with no problems.

VIAN,
I don't agree with you when you say that everything that ships with a fan really needs it. Many manufaturers today slaps fans on nearly everything to make it look cool and sell it to people that really don't know what the're buying.

But, now, in this case with the 8500dv with a broken fan I agree with you; it's not a very good idea to run it without the fan, only using the tiny heatsink that it usually comes with it. It will probably not be enough to cool the GPU
If you want a silent solution, you should try some kind of large passive heatsink. Maybe something from Zalman, they have a couple of interesting solutions.

When the fan on My 8500dv died I removed
the fan from the heatsink then took a 40mm fan
I had around, snipped the motor and blades from
the frame and used double sided tape to stick it
in the center of the heatsink.
The original fan is only 5v so you cant plug the
repacement into the header on the card and the
fan is a little bit thicker than the original but not
much so it doesn't pose any problems
It works perfectly and it seems to move a bit more air
than before.
