I think it is just a marketing scheme. I don't notice any difference between the two.

Yes, there is noticeable difference in smoother image quality especially if the progressive scan dvd player has auto 3:2 pulldown detection.

Some TV's actually do as good or better job of descaling than the dvd player. However, with a dvd player that doesn't even offer the progressive option, I'd be a little more worried about the quality of its output (color accuracy etc.). You got a HDTV, spend a liitle on the dvd player!

Probably not worth it. Save your money. Will make a bigger difference with a larger TV.

Thats what i was assuming... I wouldnt mind DVD-A/SACD playback, but don't have the speakers/reciever for it yet :)

What about those Upconvert dvd players, are those worth the $200+ price tag?

Now that's a marketing ploy.

how could a player upconvert to 1080i when dvd discs are made at only of 720x480 progressive.

No idea... My HD-PVR does a decent job upconverting a SD signal. It just seems to clean up the image some.

Upconversion is great, if the scaler in your DVD player is better than the one in your digital display. No marketing ploy at all, but the quality difference really depends on these factors. For those with analog displays (CRT), it's seriously not worth it.

What exactly is a scaler? Also, if i do end up upgrading my dvd player... What are your recs? Anything decent in the < $100 range? What about that Samsung Upconvert dvd player for like $180, any good?

I definitely notice a difference with progressive scan on my 51" RPTV... Not sure if you'd notice on a 30" CRT, though.

agreed.

But on a larger TV, with the DVD player doing the de-interlacing all digitally it can make for a great image.

Please for the love of all things good and wholesome, avoid the Samsung upconverting DVD players. They're totally wrong for video. The output PC type levels (0-255) on their DVI instead of video type (16-235). Terrible. :( Think of the children! The children!

A scaler simply takes whatever resolution its fed, and changes it to another resolution. On a CRT display, there really is no "native" resolution, so it's not a huge deal. However, with a digital display (LCD, DLP, D-ILA, LCOS, SXRD, Plasma, etc) there is a native resolution, and that's why non-native resolutions look so bad on your typical computer LCD display. If the scaler in your DVD player is better than the one built in to your TV, than you'll see a noticable difference.

There's nothing decent around $100. The best bang for your buck is the Panasonic DVD-S97S, which is about $260. This being said, there's absolutely no reason to get it if you don't have a digital display.

On my HDTV it (progressive scan) is a very noticable difference. On the 27" Sony I have in the den, not really noticable.
