So, I have this 8800 GT with an accelero S1 and a big fan on it, that takes some 3 slots bellow, "eating" all the pci-express x1 I have on my motherboard.

But, the Pci-express X4 slot for crossfire is free. So I was wondering if a pci-express X1 sound card would work normally into that X4 slot, knowing that these two are related somehow. I've read somewhere on the internet that it should work in theory, but I can't seem to find someone who did it.

AFAIK, it should work fine. I've heard of people running video cards in X8 slots that were physically X16 sized. As long as you install it properly, I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work, as the PCI-E x1 card will only physically take up one "lane's" connector.

Yes, they are backwards compatible. I have a PCIe-8X RAID controller in the 16x port on my mobo.
